Long Live Your Bouquet: Tips for Keeping Flowers Fresh

Flowers are a beautiful and thoughtful gift for any occasion, but they can quickly lose their beauty and wilt away. To help you enjoy your bouquet for as long as possible, we've compiled a list of 9 simple and effective tips for keeping your flowers fresh and beautiful.

Spread Your Blooms. Flowers need space to breathe and an adequate amount of water, so if you have a larger bouquet, opt for a larger vase. If you don't have a larger vase, you can separate the bouquet and use multiple vases.

Keep Your Flowers Healthy and Hydrated. Make sure your vase is clean before you fill it up to prevent bacteria growth. After your clean vase dries, fill it with cold water to help maintain your flowers' freshness, and consider adding flower food to the water. To make sure your flowers stay hydrated and fresh, fill your vase three-quarters full and keep topping it off as the flowers soak up the liquid

Feed Your Flowers. Did you know that cut flowers thrive in slightly acidic water? To keep your blooms in tip-top shape, aim for a pH level between 3.5 and 5.0. With this pH balance sweet spot, your cut flower bouquet will bloom beautifully for days on end! You can make your own flower food or use the premade flower food packet if your flowers came with one. You can make your own by adding 2 tablespoons of lemon or lime juice and a tablespoon of sugar to a quart of water, or two tablespoons of white vinegar and two tablespoons of sugar to a quart of water.

Angle for Perfection: Cut the Stems Right. Cutting the stems at a 45-degree angle allows the flowers to take in more water and nutrients, which helps prevent wilting. Use clean scissors or garden shears, and immediately place the stems in a vase of water to prevent air from getting trapped. Recut the stems each time you change the water every other day.

Prune to Perfection: Trim Your Flowers. Any foliage that is submerged in water can lead to bacterial growth, so trim any excess leaves or petals, and prune any leaves below the waterline. This also helps the flowers take in more water and nutrients. You can add the trimmed parts to your compost bin.

Keep it Cool: Your Flowers Need Shade. Don't put your flowers in direct sunlight, near hot things or wind from fans, air conditioning or open windows. Tulips and some other flowers are easily damaged by heat. Flowers need sunlight to grow, but the warmth from the sun can cause the flowers in your vase to wilt faster.

Keep Your Bouquet Away from Fruits and Vegetables. The fruit bowl could be the reason why your flowers are wilting and dying because fruits and veggies release ethylene, a hormone that speeds up the ripening process. And when flowers are exposed to ethylene, they wither away before their time. So if you want your bouquet to last, keep it away from your fruit and veggies.

Add a Few Drops of Vodka. Surprisingly, adding a few drops of vodka to your vase can make your flowers last longer. This is because the alcohol in vodka stops the flowers from producing ethylene, which causes them to wilt. So, a little bit of vodka can slow down the wilting process and help your flowers stay fresh for longer.

Water You Waiting For? To prevent bacteria growth and avoid a rotten odor, change the water every two days or as needed. Re-clean the vase when you do this. Add more of the flower food you made every time you change the water.

By following these simple tips, you can enjoy your flowers for days to come and reduce your environmental footprint by choosing sustainably harvested flowers.
