Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3

High Risk

Vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol, is a fat-soluble vitamin important for calcium metabolism and bone health. It is synthesized in the skin upon exposure to sunlight and is also found in some foods and supplements. Its primary function is to promote the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the body.

Sustai Insights

Vitamin D3 offers functional benefits such as supporting bone health and immune function. However, excessive intake can lead to toxicity, presenting risks like hypercalcemia. Environmental concerns include its potential for bioaccumulation. Regulatory bodies impose usage restrictions due to these risks, resulting in a high overall risk assessment. Safe usage practices should be observed, and alternatives such as vitamin D2 may be considered.

Tocopherol, D Alpha

Tocopherol, D Alpha

Low Risk

Tocopherol, specifically d-alpha tocopherol, is a naturally occurring form of Vitamin E. It is commonly used in cosmetic and personal care products primarily for its antioxidant properties, helping to protect formulations from oxidation and extend shelf life.

Sustai Insights

D-alpha tocopherol provides effective antioxidant benefits, contributing to product stability. It is sustainably sourced and generally regarded as safe, with low concerns regarding carcinogenicity, allergies, and reproductive toxicity. However, there are minor concerns about endocrine disruption. Regulatory bodies have not imposed significant restrictions, indicating low overall risk. Recommended usage practices include adhering to established safe concentration thresholds. Alternatives, such as other forms of Vitamin E or plant-based antioxidants, may also be considered.

Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed

Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed

Low Risk

Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed is derived from the seeds of the sunflower plant and is commonly used in various cosmetic and personal care products. It serves primarily as an emollient and skin conditioning agent, providing moisture and enhancing the texture of formulations.

Sustai Insights

Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed offers functional benefits, including skin conditioning and moisturizing properties, while being sustainably sourced and biodegradable. Health risks are minimal, with low concerns for carcinogenicity, allergies, and reproductive toxicity. Environmentally, it presents low risks of pollution or bioaccumulation. Regulatory assessments indicate no current restrictions. Overall, it is considered a low-risk ingredient, and safe usage practices should be maintained. Alternative ingredients may include other plant-based oils, but the sunflower seed oil remains a viable option.

Moisturizing and effective

My skin was still very itchy and dried out/peeling from being burnt when I used this product. Not only did it prevent sunburn but it also gave me some itch relief and re-hydrated my skin a bit. Use sparingly... the instructions say to "apply liberally" but this stuff is thick out of the bottle. Shake it well or kneed it and then smear it till it's thin and you can "see" it but not feel it.

Sun is stronger, but Waxhead can handle!

Back again to let you know Waxhead is still doing the job. 6 months later, after another hot (getting hotter) summer under the blazing (more blazing) Hawaiian sun, and it's keeping me alive. Latest dermatology exam showed no new lesions where Waxhead was applied. Had two small pre-cancer spots on back of my throwing hand that I didn't put any on while playing softball. Luckily, a blast of liquid nitrogen froze them off, and I'm good to go for another 4 months. But Waxhead will cover all exposed skin from now on. Especially helpful on nose, ears, and neck. Also comforting to know that whatever washes off when swimming or surfing is not harming the ocean.Climate change deniers can stick their heads in the sand, but better spread Waxhead on their butts, because the sun is definitely stronger and UV rays more intense.Burn, baby, burn is not just a phrase from the 60's!*************************************************************************************************************************That headline is no joke. Waxhead Skin Defense is the most effective sunscreen I've ever used and believe me, after 35 years in the Hawai'ian sun, burning and peeling more times than I can count, and 17 skin-cancer surgeries, it's no hype. No other brand I've used comes close in preventing further damage. 5 years of Waxhead with no sunburns are proof.Yes, it does take extra effort to spread on your skin and leaves a slight white tinge. But that's because the 25% zinc oxide is providing the needed protection and the beeswax and extra virgin olive oil are helping keep it in place. If you knead the tube before use to the right consistency and rub it in properly, a little goes a long way. And you won't look like a mime. More importantly, you won't look like a lobster two hours later. Or have to see your dermatologist four times a year.So I only gave it 4 stars for ease of application, but would give 6 stars if possible for value and sun protection. If there were categories for all-natural ingredients and environmental safety there'd be two more 6's.

You will look like the undead, but remain the unburnt.

Look, I’ll cut straight to the chase: I wore a sarong, a cover up over my suit, a wide brimmed hat, and sunglasses, and slathered this all over my body. As I tend to favor dark colors, I basically looked like Wednesday Addams on the gulf coast beach we stuck our pop-up on. But as I have burned pretty badly in the past, especially in locales closer to the equator (I’m looking at you, Jamaica), I decided enough is enough. It was time to stop giving a s**t about seeing zinc sunblock on my skin and whether I looked like the walking dead, and to start giving a s**t about skin cancer from the damage, which has the potential to literally make me one of the walking dying.Granted, I was under the shade most of the day, but I was also not for significant chunks of time. I also was sweaty and it was June in the Gulf of Mexico, and I helped my kid build a sandcastle in the full blazing 12 pm sun (who doessss that???) I reapplied a few times; this does rub off against rash guard sleeves, straps, etc. However, every sunblock does that.My husband wanted to be a Cool Guy and use the chemical big-brand spray stuff on his legs. I felt a little sorry for him as the wind cut through the beach and most of it blew away before it hit his skin, but I let him make his sovereign choice. By the end of the day, those were the spots that were roasted...his zinc-blocked spots were fine. He admitted at the end of the trip: “Well, you can tell which one actually works.” Yes, yes you can.The only complaint I have (which I posted on my review of the kids version of this sunblock) is that it seems wasteful to market separate products that are the same ingredients and I’m guessing the same formula. If they’re different formulas, it would help to know that, but I would have been happier carrying one mondo tube of this for the whole family vs. two smaller tubes of environmentally unfriendly plastic. Simplicity here would be helpful! I also purchased the stick, and liked its thicker coverage for some things (nose, scalp, ears, etc) but the “oh look, a mime” factor on that is pretty high. This was my preferred version of the sunblock as it’s easier to slather on the whole body. Great ingredients and I look forward to seeing how this company evolves. My favorite zinc sunblock I’ve tried; will buy again!

Protected us and didn't cause a rash!

I bought the stick version last year for travel on an airplane and really liked it, so I bought this version to try. I find it easier to apply than the stick- my kids tend to walk out with a couple of circles not rubbed in when they use the stick. We are super fair- so the sunscreen making us white is not really a problem. I would recommend trying the tinted- maybe even mix the the two??? to get a shade that matches your skin. The best part was no rashes after 8 straight days of use in the Florida humidity. Every other sunscreen we have tried has caused a rash.
