Sodium fluoride is an inorganic salt of fluorine commonly used in dental products and water fluoridation to help prevent tooth decay. It works by strengthening tooth enamel and inhibiting the growth of harmful oral bacteria.

Sustai Insights

Sodium fluoride provides significant functional benefits as a cavity-preventing agent in dental care products. However, it has high use restrictions due to potential health risks, including low concerns for carcinogenicity, allergies, and reproductive toxicity. Environmental risks include being a pollutant, though it is not known to bioaccumulate. Regulatory bodies have issued advisories against excessive use. Overall, while effective, the high-risk designation necessitates careful usage practices, and safer alternatives exist.

Unspecified Natural Flavor

Unspecified Natural Flavor

Medium Risk

Unspecified natural flavor refers to a flavoring ingredient derived from natural sources, used to enhance the taste of food products. Its specific composition is not disclosed, and it may contain various plant or animal extracts.

Sustai Insights

Unspecified natural flavors serve to enhance product taste without detailed transparency on their composition. While generally recognized as safe with low concerns for carcinogenicity, allergies, or reproductive toxicity, limited data exists on their environmental impacts. Regulatory bodies do not impose significant restrictions, leading to a moderate risk level. Safe usage practices should be observed, particularly for sensitive individuals. Alternatives such as specific essential oils or flavor extracts could provide clearer ingredient profiles.

However, it has been classified as a moderate concern for potential carcinogenicity and carries low risks for allergies and reproductive toxicity. Environmental risks include its pollutant potential, though it is not known to bioaccumulate. Regulatory bodies have issued specific restrictions regarding its use, leading to an overall medium risk assessment. Safe usage practices should be observed, with consideration for alternatives such as zinc oxide for a more sustainable option.

Xylitol

Xylitol

Low Risk

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol used primarily as a sweetener. It is commonly found in oral care products and food items, offering a sweetening effect similar to sugar but with fewer calories. It serves as a humectant and can contribute to dental health by reducing the risk of cavities.

Sustai Insights

Xylitol provides functional benefits as a low-calorie sweetener and may help improve dental health by inhibiting cavity-causing bacteria. It is generally recognized as safe by the FDA with low concern for cancer, allergies, or reproductive toxicity. Environmental risks are minimal, as xylitol is biodegradable and does not accumulate in the ecosystem. Regulatory bodies have not imposed significant restrictions. Overall, xylitol presents a low risk when used appropriately, with no major adverse health effects reported and sustainable sourcing options available.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Low Risk

Sodium lauryl sulfate is the sodium salt of lauryl sulfuric acid, commonly used as a surfactant in various personal care and cleaning products. It functions primarily to create lather and reduce surface tension, facilitating the distribution of other ingredients.

Sustai Insights

Sodium lauryl sulfate effectively serves as a surfactant, enhancing product performance in cleansing formulations. It is generally considered to have low health risks, with minimal concerns regarding carcinogenicity, allergy, or reproductive toxicity. Environmental impact is also low, as it is not classified as a bioaccumulative pollutant. Regulatory bodies, including the FDA, impose no significant restrictions on its use. Safe usage practices should still be observed to minimize skin irritation. Overall, sodium lauryl sulfate is assessed as low risk, with alternatives like sodium coco sulfate available for those seeking more sustainable options.

Chondrus Crispus (Carrageenan)

Chondrus Crispus (Carrageenan)

Low Risk

Chondrus crispus, commonly known as carrageenan, is a gelatinous polysaccharide derived from red algae. It is primarily used as a thickening, stabilizing, and gelling agent in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, providing texture and consistency to various products.

Sustai Insights

Teeth feel but don't look clean

Used this product for a few weeks. I liked the texture and taste, and my teeth felt clean. Unfortunately, however, my teeth started to look more gray and less clean. I changed nothing else about my oral hygiene routine during this time - flossed and used the same mouth wash daily - so it has to be due to the toothpaste. Bummer as I really wanted this product to work for me. Tried to return but am unfortunately outside of the return window at this point.
